Collaboration with Bonnie Maclean for:
Free People
This project was a hypothetical collaboration for Free People clothing honoring the art work of the great psychedelic poster artist Bonnie Maclean. Historically, and currently female artists and designers have been both marginalized and under represented. I decided to celebrate one of the great female artists, who was largely overlooked in comparison to her male contemporaries in a way that would incorporate the beauty of her artistry and celebrate femininity. I decided to create designs using elements of her original designs along with what some may consider stereotypical feminine attributes to make a statement. The combination hopefully conveying the important message that she should not be forgotten (look for the message implanted in her design on the tote bag) nor should any woman artist, designer, or expression of femininity in any form be under celebrated.
Trifold double sided informational card to be included with purchase
Altering her design for the dress was a challenge. Not only did I alter the colors, but as the original design was not conducive to wrapping around the back of the dress as I envisioned, I ended up rendering the peacock plumes on the back of the dress myself to fulfill my design.
Altering the poster design for the tote bag was a lot of fun. Iām sure you can see the important message I designed into her hat!
